Do you know what ‘Active Listening’ means? Do you have trouble remembering the steps to active listening? This handy Active Listening bookmark card has the steps for Active Listening with CARE.
Sometimes it is hard to remember to listen to understand instead of listen to respond. I really enjoy using visual reminders, so I created this bookmark. This Active Listening bookmark can help us remember what it takes to actively listen to our loved ones, our peers, and our friends. I hope this card can be a good reminder for you.
Active Listening with Care:
C- Connect & Reflect [back feelings] ex. You feel ___ when/about/because ____.
A- Ask & Clarify [open-ended questions] ex. What… / How… / Describe… / Tell me about…
Clarification involves asking open-ended questions to help someone communicate concrete, specific information.
R- Respond with Support [statement] ex. It took a lot of courage to call. I’m glad that you did. or Your child is pushing your buttons. You’re allowed to feel angry.
Validation communicates to the individual that you are not judging them and their feelings are real and important.
E- Examine your Understanding [what you’re hearing] ex. So far, we have talked about... or So, your major concerns are…
Summarizing helps identify the important parts of the conversation and focus on the main points.
